MORE ABOUT DAN
Behind the Repairs
I first became involved in music at primary school playing the euphonium and later took up piano. I decided to follow this passion for music by studying at Cardiff University, and later Kings College London, where I immersed myself in numerous brass bands, wind bands, orchestras and choirs. After graduating, I helped create Cathays Brass, a community brass band in Cardiff which gives local musicians the chance to come together through the medium of brass playing.
After moving back to my home city of Bristol in 2020 I decided on a complete career change and started training with Lucy Coad, a leading expert in early piano conservation and restoration. I have also been training with Peter Barnes, the son of the renowned organologist and maker/restorer John Barnes. Peter is well known in the harpsichord world for repairs and secondhand instruments. This has allowed me to further expand my experience of working with numerous instruments including spinets and clavichords and gain a working knowledge in many aspects of maintanence, tuning and repair.
All this was made possible with the kind support of The Finchcocks Charity who are actively looking to encourage and train the next generation of keyboard makers and technicians.
